You see, the name Marland has this etymology: 'Mar' comes from the Latin word for 'sea', whereas land is pretty self-explanatory.
However, as it has been discovered by some of the top government officials and myself, getting land either by the sea or on the sea, or even making our own island is three things:
1: It is expensive. Average islands, even in our price range, cost over AU$200,000. Making a permanent island is even more expensive.
2: It is hard to find. Even to find one uninhabited stretch of coastline in Queensland or New South Wales is one of the hardest things to do, especially since the only logical place I found was right next to a military base - not advisable for secessionism...
3: It would be uncomfortable to most citizens. To even live on a ship would cause discomfort to those who suffer from seasickness. And that would be a few of you.
Now, the reason for having the idea of claiming sea is that we would not infringe on the national borders of any nation. But that would mean that we would have to make an island, or, as said, use ships, as all land is claimed.
Which is not good.
Because: Expense.
So - the only logical solution is to seek new land inside Australia - which is what many great micronations have done, including the Hutt River Province, Atlantium (*shudder*), and the Aerican Empire (yes, their flag is a smiley face...), whereas some major examples of nations which claimed islands or sea are Minerva, (which was swiftly invaded by a larger country which had a somehow 'more legitimate claim' to the place where no-one had visited but the micronationalists), Sealand (successful, but having to rely on mainland Britain for supplies and... well, everything.) and other countries which have nothing to back up their claims.
So, that leaves us with a big problem. If we want sea, or even a peninsula, we will need to overcome a lot of problems, like finding land, buying land, living on the land, and fending off other claims.
We will have to go inland.
But, as we are called Marland, this leaves us with a problem. We could keep the name and just change our ideals, or we could (and here's the bad news...) change the name.
But, we Council of the Sea members (which will need to be renamed also...) along with some random name generators and myself, have been bouncing name ideas off each other to see how they sound. And here is my (not final) list.
Bearing in mind that if anyone wants to add to the list, either PM me or post after this post. I will add a poll to vote on the names.
So, here they are. The names:
Marland
This was the original name for the nation, and I am fine with it, its just that because we probably will have no sea, Mar, the Latin for Sea, is not very good.
Flammacia
I like the idea. It sounds a bit too much like flame, but then again, it might be good, as flame rejuvenates as well as conquers. So, perhaps.
Arboria
This could work to show the trees of the nation. However, I think this would be a better state, city or province name rather than a national one.
Ordevias
Used a random name generator. It sounds quite nice.
The Republic of the Inlands
Likely we will be getting land further inland, so it could work.
Thantis
Sounds nice.
Terland/Republic of the Terrestrial Land
Latin for land. Perhaps?
Olania
Again, sounds nice.
Proland
Might seem a bit unprofessional or standoffish, but it has a nice ring to it.
